Disc-on-disc instrument
The mud motor located inside of the oil drilling head operates in an aggressive environment. Temperature and pressure are high and the operation environment can be corrosive due to H2S, CO2 and chlorides. The frictional forces and the material wear between the mud motor rotor and stator are high in the presence of mud.
Cormet has designed and manufactured a disk-on-disk tribocorrosion instrument that simulates the rotor–stator interaction. Two disks are pressed together and rotated in an oil bath. The rotation speed and direction of both the disks can be controlled independently. The disk material combinations are typically steel–steel or steel–rubber coating. The force pushing the disks together can be applied and measured in a wide range. The corrosion/wear rate is obtained by measuring the disk diameter reduction and the weight loss.
